The Value of Dads – Celebrating Father’s Day in Honor of Dad's Everywhere

Let’s talk about dads. The funny ones, the quiet ones, the hardworking ones, the ones who show up, who love their families, and who carry so much responsibility without asking for a spotlight. Father’s Day is that one day we get to say, “Hey Dad, we see you. We appreciate you. You matter.”

So what is Father’s Day, anyway?

Father’s Day is a day set aside to honor fathers and father figures. In the United States, we celebrate it on the third Sunday of June each year. It’s not just about the tie or the grill set (though those are nice too). It’s about recognizing the role dads play in the home, the hearts of their children, and in the overall value they bring to the family.

The first Father’s Day was celebrated in 1910 in Spokane, Washington. A lady named Sonora Smart Dodd wanted to honor her own father, a Civil War veteran who raised six kids on his own after his wife died.

She was inspired by Mother’s Day and wanted something similar for dads. Afterall, they are important and deserved to be remember as well. However, while you would have thought everyone was on board, it took a while to catch on nationwide, but by 1972, it was officially recognized as a U.S. holiday.

Why We Celebrate Dads

Dads have a way of leaving a mark that kids carry forever. Whether it’s silly bedtime stories, fixing things around the house, throwing a football in the yard, or leading the family in prayer—dads bring something special to the table. Especially, seeing dad's the lead the children to know about Jesus.

Of course, every family looks different. Some dads are the strong and the silent type, others are loud and full of jokes. Every dad is different, yet all dad's teach their children life's lessons, through the character and example that they live.

The point is, dads matter.

And let’s not forget about grandpas, uncles, stepdads, pastors, or any man who steps up and becomes a godly role model to a child. Fatherhood isn’t just biological— if a man loves a child and is a role model to that child, he makes a positive difference.

It's about being there, loving unconditionally , and pointing children to truth and stability in Christ.

In our home and homeschool life, we see the impact of my husband every day. He might not be the one sitting at the table doing math facts or history with the kids, but his presence brings peace. His leadership gives our home a sense of order. And the way our kids look up to him and appreciate his faithfulness to the family.

It’s amazing . I know many of you feel the same way about the dads in your life too.

Why Fatherhood Matters So Much

Kids thrive when they have a strong father in their lives. Countless studies show it—but honestly, we don’t need the research to know it’s true. A dad’s voice, a dad’s guidance, a dad’s protection—it brings a kind of confidence to a child that’s hard to explain but easy to see, because that is God's plan and the order of the home. When there is a father in the home, it brings a sense of peace and calm to it.

They might not always say it out loud (especially those older ones!), but children need their dads. They want to be known by them, noticed by them, and loved by them. Just like moms bring warmth and nurturing, dads often bring steadiness and strength.

And spiritually speaking, God created the family with intention. Fathers are called to lead, guide, and protect. They are to love their wives and raise their children in the nurture and admonition of the Lord (Ephesians 6:4). That’s no small task! And in a world that often overlooks or undervalues men who live out this calling, Father’s Day is our chance to say, “Keep going—you’re doing important work.”

A Simple Gift for Father’s Day: Free ‘This Is My Dad’ Worksheet

Now, I know how busy life gets. We’ve got laundry piles, homeschool lessons, dinner to make, and about a hundred other things on the to-do list. But sometimes, it’s the simple things that leave the biggest impression.

But I have these simple worksheets you can download and the kids can make for a keep sake for dad this Father's Day, birthday day or anytime.

You can grab it below. It's FREE (I'll link it at the bottom)

This is perfect for:

  • Homeschool families

  • Sunday school classes

  • Co-op groups

  • Or just a quiet afternoon craft at home

Here’s what’ YOU GET :

  • 2 questionnaire worksheets for dad. This is my dad worksheets

One worksheet has a place for a drawing of your child or you can paste a picture.

These little memory pages are such treasures—especially when kids fill them out in their own words. You never know what they’ll say, and honestly, those are the best kinds of gifts.

Dads don’t need something expensive or flashy. Just knowing they’re loved and seen means everything.

Ideas!

Print the worksheets on regular paper or cardstock, let your kids color the pages and answer the questions, and maybe even laminate them to make them last longer.

A Father’s Day to Remember

So this Father’s Day, take a minute to slow down. Whether it’s a backyard picnic, church service, or just time around the table, let’s show the dads in our lives just how much we value them.

We don’t need a big production. Just a card, a hug, a heartfelt thank you—and maybe this sweet little worksheet filled out in a child’s handwriting.

And if you’re a single mom reading this—maybe you’re raising your kids without a dad in the picture right now—my heart is with you too. God will bless you for all you are doing to do both rolls as Mom and Dad.

If there’s a grandpa, pastor, or trusted friend you want to honor this year, use this worksheet for them too. Father figures come in many forms, and the love your child gives will be just as meaningful.

All though we appreciate our husbands and the work they do for the kids, let's take this special time of the year value the dads who serve faithfully, loving and sacrificially for their families each and everyday.

A Final Word and a Scripture to Encourage Dads

As we wrap up, let’s remember what God’s Word says about the role of a father:

“Like as a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth them that fear him.” – Psalm 103:13, KJV

What a beautiful reminder that a godly father reflects the tender love and compassion of our Heavenly Father. Dads have such a special calling, and Father's Day is the perfect time to remind them of just how valued they are.
